Book Cover Design

For this project, I was tasked to redesign the cover of any book of my liking and I chose to redesign a book by author S.L. Huang called The Water Outlaws. The story centers on Lin Chong, a warrior caught between loyalty to a corrupt empire and the marginalized outlaws who resist it. As Lin gets entangled with these rebels, she must navigate shifting alliances, her own moral dilemmas, and the harsh consequences of resistance. The book explores themes of justice, rebellion, gender, and power in a vivid, action-packed setting. To evoke a sense of power and mysticism I decided to make the Lin Chong stand with poise against a teal backdrop with golden accents and a golden bow. The sun-like design around her head represents her larger role in the story. Through her teal and red garment I conveyed both a feeling of serenity and conflict, which echoes themes of inner turmoil and societal struggle. I decided to go with a more East Asian- inspired type with a handwritten essence to reflect the historical setting. The dynamism of the text adds a feeling of urgency as the protagonist of the story has to act quickly to save the empire.
